World Champion Sebastian Vettel went back to pole postions today in the qualifying for the Turkish Grand Prix. On the Istambul circuit, the German was the quickest as his team conquered the front row for tomorrow's race.
Vettel and Webber were safely through Q1 and Q2 and in the final part of the session opted to save their tyres for tomorrow's race as they made an early attempt in Q3 and didn't even have to make a second effort to keep their top-two placing. The celebrations were made in the pits.
After showing good pace during pratices everyone was eager to know if Mercedes would be able to show it on qualifying. Nico Rosberg showed that it wasn't just a mirage and brought his W02 to third place and he will share the second with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.
For the fifth time in a row Ferrari's Fernando Alonso will start from fifth position. The Spaniard is still struggling with the pace of the Ferrari 150th Italia and still dreaming of being competitive as last year. Alonso will be joined on the third line by Jenson Button.
Both Lotus Renaults made it to Q3 with Petrov finishing in seventh and Heidfeld in ninth being splitted by Michael Schumacher that was frustrated of not delivering the same performance as his team-mate. Felipe Massa will be starting in tenth after making his way to Q3 with an engine which was changed before practice. The Brazilian didn't make a lap on Q3 leaving him on the last place of the top-ten.
Coming in 11th, Rubens Barrichello gave Williams its best qualifying position in a tough start of the 2011 season for the team. In the last instants of Q2 he was on a position to qualify to Q3 until Heidfeld squeezed ahead by 0.024s. Pastor Maldonado was 14th in the second Williams, with the two Force Indias between them.
Kamui Kobayashi was the first man to leave the pits in qualifying but it didn't pay off as hydraulic problems affected his C30 and he didn't even get the chance to finish his first lap. He was immediatly out of qualifying and out of contention and he will have the thrilling mission to recover from last position on tomorrow's race. His team-mate Sergio Pérez was 15th ahead of the Toro Rossos of Buemi and Alguersuari.
Team Lotus is constantly making progresses and are getting closer to the middle pack timing from race to race. Although he didn't make to Q2 Heikki Kovalainen just missed on Rubens Barrichelo time by 0.5s, which is a great improvement for the team.
