The possibility of Volkswagen producing the Bluesport roadster is looking less likely, and it is partially the America's fault.
Volkswagen thinks that it needs to sell 50k Bluesports a year to make it viable. To support that number of sales, the Bluesport would have to be sold in the US and Canada. However, Volkswagen of America is trying to increase sales to 800k units per year by 2018, and it does not feel that adding a niche model like the Bluesport would help them reach that goal.
"To get to 800k units, we don’t need to keep adding to our portfolio of models. We’re concentrating on our core models," said VW of America boss Jonathan Browning.
Autocar found that the engineering of the Bluesport is totally complete, but it needs a viable business model to go on sale. Audi and Porsche had both considered making versions of the Bluesport, but if it does not go on sale, then the Audi and Porsche variations are canceled as well.
The Bluesport was intended as a two-seat roadster powered by a 2.0 liter, TDI engine producing 178hp and 258lb-ft of torque, but it would have had a combined fuel economy of 42mpg.
