"There's a great opportunity for us for a mid-size SUV in the U.S," said Volkswagen of America CEO Jonathan Browning.
He did not say when the new model might go on sale.
Volkswagen has been growing in the US and completed a factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a year ago to build the Passat. The new factory has been such a success that VW is hiring 1000 more workers, and it is even considering investing to expand the factory to allow it to produce 250,000 cars a year from the current 150,000 cars a year.
Brown did not say if the expanded factory would produce the new mid-size SUV. He did say that he expects VW sales to be up at least 20% in the US for 2012.
