Volkswagen Group Takes Top Honors in Golden Steering Wheel Awards

Bild presents the awards based on nominations by readers

Volkswagen took more of the awards this year than any other automaker

Bild has awarded its Golden Steering Wheel awards for 2013, and Volkswagen GroupVolkswagenVolkswagenGermany, 1938 > present98 models

is the clear winner. Of the 25 awards, Volkswagen Group took 10 of the honors.

Bild decides the awards by allowing Bild am Sonntag and Auto Bild readers nominate cars in the categories. This year it had over 200,000 votes. A group of 40 testers consisting of auto journalists, Bild editors, designers and racing drivers experience each car and award them points. The cars with the most points obviously win.

As we already reported, the Honorary Golden Steering this year went to Peter Schreyer who now leads design for HyundaiHyundaiHyundaiRepublic of Korea, 1967 > present79 models

Porsche Cayman

The Cayman rounded out the top three in the coupe and convertible class.

Bild am Sonntag and Auto Bild received over 200,000 votes to select the nominees for the awards.

BMW 4 Series

The BMW 4 Series took second place in the category for coupes and convertibles. 

The 40 vehicle testers include Bild editors, journalists, designers, race drivers and other prominent people in the auto industry.

Jaguar F-Type

The F-Type won the coupe and convertible class for 2013.

Ford Tourneo Custom

Ford's latest Tourneo Custom rounded out the van category.

Kia Carens

The new Kia Carens took second place in the van category.

Citroën C4 Picasso

The latest Citroën C4 Picasso took top marks in the van category. 

Mazda 3

The final car in the compact and city car category was the Mazda 3. It scored 1,358 points.

It was the only non-Volkswagen Group winner in the category.

Seat Leon

The Seat Leon came in second in its class with 1,551 points.

Volkswagen Golf

In the compact and city car class, the Volkswagen Golf won with 1,692 points.

BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo

The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo rounded out the three cars in the mid-size category with 1,569 points.

Like the compact category, the BMW is the only non-Volkswagen Group car among the winners.

Skoda Octavia

The new Skoda Octavia took second place in the mid-size class with 1,626 points. 

It shares a platform with the A3.

Audi A3 Sedan

In the mid-size class, the new Audi A3 Sedan took top honors. It scored 1,743 points from the judges.

Bentley Continental Flying Spur

The new Bentley Continental Flying Spur rounded out the category with 1,481 points.

Tesla Model S

The all-electric Tesla Model S took second place in the large car and luxury class with 1,759 points. It was just 24 points away from taking the spot away from Mercedes. 

It is a big success for a small automaker.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

In the large car and luxury class, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class won the category with 1,783 points.

Ford Kuga

The Ford Kuga rounded out the SUV and crossover class with 1,438 points. 

Compared to the other two winners in this class, it is a far more affordable vehicle.

Land Rover Range Rover

The latest generation, all-aluminum Land Rover Range Rover took second place with 1,724 points.

It was 45 points down on the BMW.

BMW X5

The latest generation BMW X5 won the SUV and crossover class with 1,769 points.

Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid

The Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid took 1,573 points for third place in the green car class. 

It was just two points away from second place.

Volkswagen e-up!

The all-electric Volkswagen e-Up took second place in class with 1,575 points.

BMW i3

In the green car class, the BMW i3 won with 1,670 points.

Audi Land of Quattro

The next class was the best advertising campaign.

Audi took third place with its "Land of Quattro" campaign.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Mercedes-Benz advertising campaign for the A-Class in Europe was voted second best of the year.

Volkswagen Der Golf. Das Auto.

Volkswagen won the best advertising campaign for the third time. The winning campaign was for its campaign for the seventh generation Golf called "Der Golf. Das Auto."

Honorary Award for Peter Schreyer

The honorary award this year went to Peter Schreyer. He is only the second auto designer ever to win the award. 

Schreyer now leads design at Hyundai and Kia but rose to prominence while working at Audi and designing the Audi TT.
