Euro NCAP recently tested new car models including the Up and Beetle, and both received 5 stars. Not only that, but the Up got an Advanced Award for its City Emergency Braking system. It was the only car in its class to get both the five-star rating and the award. Both cars got top marks for occupant protection in all seating areas including for children who are both 18 months and 3 years old.
Euro NCAP is paying increasing attention to active safety features in cars, and both VWs were rated highly. The cars got high scores for their use of seatbelt reminders and standard ESP and led to the Up's award for its City Emergency Braking system.
The system works between 5km/h and 30km/h and scans the road 10m ahead. If an incoming collision is detected at these speeds, first it preconditions the brakes. Then if the driver does not respond or does not respond quickly enough, the system can begin braking automatically or help the driver apply the correct amount of braking to make the car come to a stop in time to avoid the collision.
