“Lightweight and extreme” is what you can expect from the Wiesmann Spyder concept which is debuting at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.
Wiesmann, the German boutique manufacturer of powerful two seat roadsters, is using the Spyder unveiling to test industry and consumer reaction before deciding whether the Spyder concept will go into production.
We’ve been told that the Spyder is powerful, ultra light and built for purists. It’s reported to be striped down to the essentials, lacking doors or a windscreen, leaving plenty of room for speculation. If it’s based on the current MF5, we can expect carbon fiber body panels and extensive use of lightweight structural alloys. If not, we may all be treated to Wiesmann’s version of something resembling the Ariel Atom or Caterham Super 7.
Wiesmann has a tradition of using retuned BMW M division engines. The Spyder concept will be powered by a retuned version of the M3’s normally aspirated 4.0-liter V8 Weighting just 998kg the 419 PS concept is said to reach a top speed of 289 km/h.
