Review

Ferrari introduced its mid-engined sports model Enzo in 2002. The high-performance ‘berlinetta’ (convertible) was named after the Italian carmaker’s founder, Enzo Ferrari, to celebrate the brand’s most recent achievement in Formula One. This model ended up, quite expectedly, benefitting a lot from F1 technology.

Overall, 401 Ferrari Enzo copies were built since its inception in 2002 until 2004. In spite of the fact that this model is no longer produced, it actually still remains amongst the world’s most powerful naturally-aspirated production vehicles.

History, development and general characteristics

Ferrari announced its ‘berlinetta’ model Enzo for the first time at the 2002 Paris Motor Show. This sports model’s technology was majorly based on Formula 1 racing, especially because it was actually launched to celebrate Ferrari’s first F1 World Championship victory in the 21st century, therefore having been named after the automaker’s founder, Enzo Ferrari.

Although production of the Enzo ceased in 2004 with 401 examples built, this car still holds the title of one the most powerful naturally-aspirated production vehicles existing. This is due to the great use of the most advanced F1 technologies on the production of the car.

Ferrari initially announced a production run of just 349 copies of the Enzo, but all of them were sold even before this model entered the assembly line. Then, after so many requests for more cars and some specific events, the company ended up building 52 more Ferrari Enzo units.

Engine and Transmission

The Ferrari Enzo is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine with 651 hp, which allows the car to go from 0 to 60 mi/h in just 3.14 seconds. The Enzo relies on a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive arraignment and achieves its top speed at an average 227 mi/h (365 km/h).
A 6-speed (sequential shift) semi-automatic transmission is fitted on the Ferrari Enzo.

Body and Design

The Ferrari Enzo’s bodywork is commonly called ‘Berlinetta’ because that is the company’s designation for its coupe models. The Pininfarina design studios styled the sporty 2-door coupe body of the Enzo.

Early years

When it opened, the Scuderia Ferrari (Italian for “Ferrari Stable”) wasn’t meant to produce road cars, but rather for sponsoring amateur drivers and already made racing cars. It was actually supposed to be the first motorsport team independent from factory, although related to Alfa Romeo. Enzo Ferrari always worked for the Alfa Romeo company, in different job positions, until around 1940. Then he quit because that a...  more
