2012 Updates - 500L

The 500L is intended to introduce a more functional twist to the popular 500 mini and combine elements of the MPV, SUV and compact segments into a new concept. The letter 'L' stands according to Fiat for three dimensions of this new idea: Large, meant as functionality and space; Light, means user-friendly technology and eco-friendliness; and Loft, a trend-setting environment.

The 500L is 4 metres and 15 centimetres long, 7 cm more than the Fiat Punto. It offers space for five passengers and their luggage of up to 400 litres. The rear seats are longitudinally adjustable and separately foldable. With the 'Fold&Tumble' function it is also possible to completely tilt the rear seat forwards to get a totally flat load compartment. The Cargo Magic Space system in the luggage compartment allows to separate different objects to protect them from damage.

At launch, the Fiat 500L will come with three efficient engines: two petrol (105 HP 0.9 TwinAir and 95 HP 1.4 litres) engines and one turbodiesel (85 HP 1.3 MultiJet 2) engine. The 105 HP Turbo TwinAir engine has emissions of 112 g/km. In 2013, the 500L will also have a Natural Power version with the Turbo TwinAir engine using a methane fuel system.

The on-board technology of the 500L offers a 5" touchscreen and UConnect multimedia system, to manage media content such as radio, mobile phone, Media Player, iPod or smartphone. Integrated navigation will also be availabe at a later point. The system also provides a view of the information supplied by the eco:Drive LIVE software that analyses the driving style and provides personalised suggestions in order to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The Fiat 500L also offers a sound system developed in collaboration with Beats Audio.

Designed by the Centro Stile Fiat, the 500L has 360° glazing. The glass roof is available in two versions: electric roof or Skydome. The colour range offers 11 body colours, resulting in 333 possible combinations of 3 different roof colours, 4 trim levels (Pop, Pop Star, Easy and Lounge) and 3 alloy rim colours. Another 'treat' Fiat offers to customers is the on-board espresso coffee machine.

The Fiat 500L is produced at the Kragujevac plant in Serbia and can be ordered in Italy and on major European markets starting July 2012. In October, it will first launch on the Italian market with others following soon. By 2013 the Fiat 500L will be on sale in more than 100 countries, including the United States.

500L Trekking

The 500L Trekking will be an outdoor-oriented trim with front-wheel drive and an advanced traction control system. It will go on sale in June across Europe.

The Traction+ traction control system is meant to be a compromise over a heavier, more expensive all-wheel drive system. The system uses special algorithms for the stability control and braking systems to simulate an electromechanical differential. The wheels are locked using the brakes. It can be activated via a button on the dashboard at speeds up to 30km/h. When the system detects a wheel slipping, it brakes the wheel to send power to the other side.

The Trekking is available in six body colors and gets unique, protective bumpers, a higher ride height, 17in wheels and brushed steel trim. Inside, buyers get a mix of cloth and fake leather seats, a 520W stereo, City Brake System and an optional espresso maker (yes, really).

The espresso maker plugs into the 12v plug in the console while the engine is running but the car is stationary. It makes a shot of espresso in less than two minutes.

The Trekking will be available with the 95hp 1.4, 104hp TwinAir Turbo, 105hp 1.6 Multijet II diesel and 85hp 1.3 Multijet II diesel.

The two new engines for the 500L range will be the 1.6 Multijet II diesel with 105hp and the 0.9 TwinAir Turbo with 105hp. Both will be available with six-speed manual transmissions.

500L Living

Fiat introduced the new seven-seat 500L Living in summer 2013. Fiat has given the car the name the Magic Purpose Wagon because it claims that it combines the looks of the 500, drivability of a city car, exterior size of a mid-size car and room of a C-segment station wagon. It looks more like the Living might be a jack of all trades but a master of none, but we will no know that for certain until it goes on sale.

The platform is identical to the 500L, but the Living adds a folding third row of seats and extra cargo room. It has an interior volume of 628 liters, 238 liters more than the 500L. It is 435cm long, 178cm wide and 167cm tall, which is 21cm longer, than the current 500L.

When it goes on sale the 500L Living is offered with the 1.4 16v 95hp petrol engine, 0.9 TwinAir Turbo 105hp petrol, 1.6 MultiJet II 105hp diesel and 1.3 MultiJet II 85hp diesel.

There are two trim levels - Pop Star and Lounge. Fiat offers the Living with 19 exterior color variations, 11 of them in two-tone and six interior trim colors.

Orders for the 500L Living begin in July 2013 in Italy and later in the rest of Europe.
