The Fiat Punto is a supermini launched in September 1993. The Italian brand has always been strong in the supermini segment, with models such as the 500 or Panda and with the Punto an entirely new model was introduced.
The suspension was constructed withMacPherson struts at the front and independent rear wheels with trailing arms, previously used on the Tipo. The car was styled by Giugiaro and had a classic look.
At launch, the 55 entry level version was available in four variants, such as the ED (Economy Drive). In 1996 the three-door version "Team" joined the Punto's line-up. In 1997 the Punto range received a restyling although few things were changed. The car had established itself as a Europe wide bestseller, so Fiat did not see reasons for fundamental changes. The most important novelties were a wider choice of body colours, new upholstery and interior trim as well as the introduction of power steering and a new 16-valve Fire 1200 engine. These changes resulted in a total of 29 model versions for the Punto. In 1998 another facelift was introduced, with a reorganization of the trim versions.
In 1999 Fiat introduced the second generation of the Punto. The model was again offered as three- and four- door version but the differences between these versions received more emphasis now. Also the chassis was reviewed, now using interconnected wheel rear suspension. The entry level engine was the 1200 eight valve that featured on the SX and ELX versions. A new power steering was also introduced, with two different modes selectable by the driver. The higher ELX model also offered air conditioning. In early 2001 the EL replaced the basic model, it vwas introduced together with the Go and the Verve versions, followed in 2003 by the Feel and the Feel Sound.
In 2003 Fiat introduced the third generation of its successful Punto supermini. The new model featured a new front with bigger headlights, a new radiator grille, bonnet and badges. With 40 versions based on two different chassis (three and five doors), eight engines, five and six manual transmission and two automatic transmissions available, the model offers a very big range. The entry-level engine is the 1.2 eight valve 60HP together with the Natural Power, only available on the five door model.
