Hyundai has the world’s largest integrated automobile factory, located in Ulsan, South Korea, with the capability to produce 1.6 milion units per year. Hyundai is also part of the Asian Big Four carmakers, along with Toyota, Honda and Nissan, being the fifth maker with more sales per year worldwide.
It all started in 1947 when Chung Ju-Yung founded the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company that lead to the creation, along with its brother, of the Hyundai Motor Company, two decades later. One year later, in 1968 the first model, Cortina, was released, setting a path to success. The first Korean car was produced by Hyundai in 1975. The exportation of models didn’t take much time. In the next year, Hyundai reached South America, and in 1986 it hit North America with Excel model, that was classified has nrº Ten Product by Fortune Magazine. In 1996, it opened a production plant in India.
By the end of the 1990s, Hyundai wanted to establish itself as a quality brand worldwide. In 1998, it acquired the rival Kia Motors and in 2000 allied with DaimlerChrysler. One of the ways to promote the business was to assure the cars quality by extending warranties and launching worldwide marketing campaigns.
Meanwhile, in 1999, Ju-Yung son, Chung Mong Koo, took the leadership of the company. But in 2006, Chung was arrested for embezzlement and the vice-chairman, Kim Dong-jin, took over the presidency of Hyundai.
Hyundai means “modernity” in Korean and one of the focuses of the company was always research. Technology to power hybrid and electric cars have been developed since the 1990s.
