The A-Class Concept was a vehicle unveieled by Mercedes-Benz at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show.

Described by Mercedes as a ‘car that might have come from another planet’, the A-Class features a long bonnet and low silhouette inspired by the F800 concept. A ‘starry sky motif’ is also evident on the exterior, with the radiator grille consisting of metallic silver dots on black stems to give the logo the appearance of being surrounded by stars. The lighting points of the full-LED high-performance headlamps continue this theme. Mercedes also say that the lines of the exterior have been taken inspiration from ‘the wind and the waves, as well as aviation engineering.’

The A-Class Concept is a front-wheel drive vehicle powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine from the M270 series. The 2.0 litre BlueEFFICIENCY engine has an output 155 kW (210 hp) and is paired with Mercedes-Benz’ seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

Other standout features of the A-Class Concept are a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist, a ‘reverse thrust control’ shift lever and a fully integrated smartphone.

A-Class

A-Class was launched in 1997 and became Mercedes-Benz entry level model. The mini multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) has 3 or 5 doors. A second generation was introduced in 2004. 50 thousand units were expected to be sold that year and according to Mercedes that number was met even before the vehicles reached the dealers. However, the A-Class wasn’t very well received by some groups that didn’t like to see Mercedes producing cars for less prestigious segments.   more
