Mitsubishi Lancer (Japan, 1979-1988)

In 1979, Mitsubishi put out the Lancer Ex, which is the 2nd generation Lancer. This model was produced for almost a decade, until 1988.

The Lancer Ex was launched with two engine options, which were the 1.4- and the 1.6-liter units, producing 80 hp (1.4-liter unit), 85 or 100 hp (1.6-liter unit). All the engines supplied for this generation of the Lancer came with Mitsubishi’s Silent Shaft Technology, as to having their noises and vibrations reduced.
In 1980, a 1.8-liter Sirius 80 engine was added to the option range, making the Lancer achieve a top speed of 96 mi/h (154 km/h). In the same year, the turbocharged 133 hp engine was also added, making a sportier-performing car out of the Lancer Ex.

Then, in 1981, a 70 hp 1.2-liter engine joined the rest of the options so that the Lancer could have a more entry-level version. In 1983, the turbocharged Lancer Ex version received an Intercooler system and raised power output to 163 hp.
The Lancer Ex was also available with a turbocharged 2.0 L engine in Europe only, producing 168 hp and reaching its top speed at 125 mi/h (201 km/h).

The Lancer Ex is front-engined and rear-wheel driven, receiving either a 4-speed or a 5-speed manual transmission, according to its versions.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Ex was offered in a 4-door sedan body style only. For this generation Lancer, Mitsubishi requested the services of an European designer, Aldo Sessano, which explains the evident difference between this Japanese-made car and the other Japanese cars from that epoch.
