*UPDATE: Images of the Audi Urban Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show 13.09.2011
*UPDATE: First we posted the video below that Audi released about the Urban Concept last week; now Audi released two images of a open-topped version of the Urban Concept. With this version the doors are hinged diagonally to do away with the sliding cockpit of the coupe.
As more and more European automakers push to make more economical models, it is ever more likely that the public will see the possible return of the city-focused microcar. Audi will be bringing the Urban Concept to the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
The Urban Concept uses a sleek body and blunt nose with cycle-style wheels mounted away from the body. The wheels are protected with fenders with strips of LEDs to make the microcar more visible. The roof slides back like a fighter plane to allow passenger entry and exit.
Audi says that Urban Concept uses 1+1 seating, which means that is a mix of side-by-side and tandem seating. Passengers sit next to but slightly behind the driver. If it is still confusing check out the image in the gallery above.
The tiny car is powered by two electric motors.
While the design of this car is completely new, Volkswagen has been playing with this concept for awhile, most notable with the VW L1 concept from 2009.
