Peugeot Pulls Out of Le Mans for 2012

Peugeot Pulls Out of Le Mans

It has been a weird day if you like sports cars. First, Toyota tweets a picture of the hybrid car it will race at Le Mans this year, and now Peugeot is pulling out of the series.

Reuters reported this morning and Peugeot Sport just confirmed on its Twitter that it will not be competing in the Le Mans Series in 2012.

The statement on Peugeot's twitter reads, "Peugeot brings down the curtain on its endurance programme so as to ensure the success of its numerous launches in 2012."

"This decision has been taken in the context of a difficult economic environment in Europe. Peugeot has chosen to concentrate resources on its sales performance in 2012," said the Peugeot brand in a statement to Reuters.

This does not mean that there will be no Peugeots racing at Le Mans. Privateer teams could still compete in the 908, but clearly a factory effort will not happen this year.

I would think that it also allows PSA to concentrate on Citroen WRC campaign. It has more impact on end customer, and they are leading the pack.

Peugeot dominated last season's Intercontinental Cup, though. It won all but one race in the series. Granted, that race was the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Noooo! I really wanted to see how this would do against that Toyota.

Sad, big sports car fan, would be great to see 3 works teams battling for the win!

Could a privateer team buy the car and run it, and would it be competitive?

Probably not, I've never really seen a private team be sucessful, but I can't watch LeMans however....don't have cable....or satillite.

Mmm, Rondeau won Le Mans, as a privateer, with his own car.

Also Ecurie Ecosse with the D-Types and more recently the Mclaren F1 GTRs were also privateers?

And Ecurie Ecosse was set-up again last year... Would they be able to re-iterate their success? ;-)
