models built between 2002 and 2003 due to airbags that could suddenly deploy. It covers all variants of the 3 Series including the coupe, sedan, convertible, station wagon and M3.

Of the 220,000 cars, 64,044 are in Germany, 42,080 are in the US, 24,272 are in the UK, 13,022 are in Italy, 10,449 are in France, 9,954 are in Spain and 7,890 are in Japan. BMW will begin repairing the cars in July, but it says that it has not received any reports of the airbags in its cars suddenly deploying.

Takata says that the problem is that the propellant in the airbags may have excess moisture in it, which could cause pressure to increase when hot and the air bags to deploy or in an accident the air bags might not have enough pressure.

The problem was first noticed in October 2011 in Japan. There were subsequent sudden airbag deployments in Peurto Rico and Maryland. There have been about 12 total cases of sudden Takata airbag employments worldwide.
