BMW will launch separate i-series showrooms in large markets to set it off as a sub-brand. It is spending €530 million to differentiate it from the main BMW brand and to make the car compete against electric models from Audi and Mercedes.
Neither of the production versions for the i3 or i8 have been revealed yet, but BMW says that the concepts are 90% production ready. We say a minor change in the i8 when BMW showed the Spider version with solid doors instead of the open doors on previous versions.
BMW is experimenting in how to market and sell the i-series as well. It is considering offering them for sale online and using a mobile sales force that can sell it to places without showrooms. None of these plans are final yet, and the traditional dealer model will still be the way the i-series cars are sold. BMW has 45 i-series dealers planned for Germany.
