With the launch of a new electric MPV model on the horizon,
Volkswagen unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the
Budd-e concept inspired by the iconic
Microbus. The production version will reach the market in 2018.
Thanks to the latest ion-lithium battery technology of VW, the vehicle has a range of 532km, about 342km more than the current
E-Golf. According to the German brand, Budd-e is the first of a series of electric production models which are being developed.
Seen as a successor of the famous Microbus, the Budd-e design is heavily inspired by the looks of the
Bulli, a concept unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Based on the new MEB electric vehicle platform, Budd-e is 4597mm long, 1940mm wide, 1835mm high and has a wheelbase of 3151mm. This platform is the same that will be used in future models with electric technology such as the
Porsche Mission E and
Audi e-tron quattro.
The concept is equipped with two electric motors, one of them placed at the front and another installed in the vehicle rear suspension. Together they have an output of 306hp and 290Nm of torque. The Budd-e reaches 100km/h in about 7 seconds and a top speed of 180km/h.
