Smart is revealing the new electric versions of the Smart fortwo, fortwo cabriolet and forfour. At the Paris Motor Show the brand will reveal three vehicles with improved range and performance as well as a significantly faster recharging system.
The new electric versions are powered with a new electric motor which was developed in partnership by
Mercedes-Benz and Renault-
Nissan. Like the
Renault Zoe the Electric Drive versions will be fitted with a rear-mounted three-phase synchronous electric motor with an 81hp output and 160Nm of torque.
Energy used to power the electric motor will be stored in a 17.6kWh lithium ion battery mounted within the floor. While the engine will be produced by
Renault at the Cleon plant in France, while the battery will be produced at Daimler’s Accumotive battery plant in Germany.
The electric motor works at the rear of the Smart electric drive and transmits its power via a constant ratio to the wheels. With torque immediately available from a standstill the new electric cars offer a range of approximately 160 km (100 miles), ideal for emission-free mobility in and around cities. The maximum speed is electronically limited to 130km/h to maximise the range. The Fortwo, Fortwo cabriolet and Forfour Electric Drive can sprint to 100km/h in 11.5 seconds, 11.8 seconds and 12.7 seconds respectively.
Charging time is an important factor for electric vehicle customers and the new smart electric drive boasts major improvements here. All models have a new, powerful on-board charger as standard. In the USA and Great Britain the charging time is 2.5 hours, half as long as for its predecessor. In Germany, where a different charger is needed due to single-phase alternating current, the smart electric drive can be charged 40 percent faster than before at a household socket. With the "smart control" app the charging process can be conveniently monitored remotely, the app also includes many more functions such as intelligent charging.
