Coffee-Fueled Car Hits 65.5mph to Take Guinness World Record

The coffee-fueled Bean Machine has received a Guinness World Record for reaching 65.5mph.

P100 and is fueled by coffee chaff, which is the skin and hull of coffee beans that are shed when coffee is roasted. The Co-operative Food commissioned the car and also sells fair trade coffee. It took the coffee chaff from its roasting, compressed them into pellets and used them to power the car.

The engine uses a charcoal fire to burn the pellets and break them down into carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The hydrogen is harvested and combusted to power the car. 

The Bean Machine was built by Martin Bacon, fabricator Colin Davidson, electronics engineer Ben Preston and Bacon's son Philip in charge of recording the project. Martin drove the car on the record run at Woodford Airfield in Stockport, England. 

“We’re thrilled to have taken the speed record for the fastest car of this kind. This coffee car has been years in the making," said Martin.
