plug-in hybrid will enter production in late 2012, and it will be Ford's first plug-in hybrid on sale in the US. Ford has just released the specs for the car in the US.

The C-Max Energi will have a 550-mile total range and 20 mile pure electric range. Ford says that the car gets 95 mpge thanks to its plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Power comes from the same engine and electric motor as found in the C-Max Hybrid. It produces 188hp in total from the electric motor and 2.0 liter Atkinson cycle engine. The larger plug-in battery pack allows the car to have a longer electric range.

The C-Max Energi is part of Ford's push towards electric vehicles in the US. The Ford Focus Electric is already on sale in the US. The C-Max Hybrid is available for order now. The next generation Fusion will also get Hybrid and Energi models next year.

"We are proud C-MAX Energi is the first plug-in hybrid that can deliver a 550-mile overall range and more than 20 miles of electric range as it gives customers great flexibility to commute to work, then take off for a road trip while passing many gas stations along the way,” said Ford Chief Nameplate Engineer John Davis.

Ford has not announced a price for the C-Max Energi yet. However, the C-Max Hybrid will start at $25,995 in the US. The Energi will probably be slightly more.
