Who needs a 650hp muscle Mustang convertible? No one, but deep down everyone loves the idea. To celebrate 20 years of Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT), there will be a special edition Shelby GT500 Convertible.
The first SVT Mustang 20 years ago used a 5.0 liter V8 that made 235hp. Now the SVT Mustang uses a supercharged, 5.8 liter V8 with 650hp and 600lb-ft of torque. The current Shelby GT500 has a claimed top speed of 200mph.
“The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the performer that the coupe is. All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a convertible that could really shine on the track but can still be driven on a daily basis,” said Kerry Baldori, SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer.
The new car has an adaptable suspension that lets drivers choose between normal and Sport modes. It also has six-piston Brembo brakes. For even more performance there is a track package that adds an oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler.
