Infiniti Borrowing Mercedes A-Class Platform for Future Compact

Nissan Borrowing A-Class Platform for Future Infiniti Front-Drive Compact

Infiniti wants to compete with models like the 1-series and Audi A3 with its Etherea compact, sports sedan. It showed the Etherea concept first at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and later at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It has just revealed that the Etherea when it is produced it will use the same platform at the Mercedes A-Class.

Car and Driver reports that the car will get a gasoline engine in the US and diesel option in Europe. The A-Class platform will be modified for the Etherea, and the car could end up as a compact crossover, according to Car and Driver.

The odd thing about using a Mercedes platform for Infiniti's next vehicle is that Nissan and Renault already have plenty of front-wheel drive platforms that could be used for a vehicle like this.

It still weirdly resembles the original car. Why can't they change the front so it looks like they actually made their own car???

Infinity is Nissan, Nissan and Renault are almost 1 and the same company, and Renault signed several cooperation agreements with Mercedes last year. So it should not be such a surprise...
