At the age of 70 Irv Gordon is planning to reach an unmatchable record of mileage with his Volvo P1800. Driver of the highest mileage vehicle on the road, the American wants to reach the three million mark in the next three years.
Gordon is a retired science teacher from East Patchogue, N.Y., and purchased his Volvo P1800 in 1966. The first two days were an appetizer for what was to come as Gordon drove for 1,500 miles. In its first ten years with the P1800 the American drove 500,000 miles.
With 1,69 million miles in his P1800, Irv Gordon made the Guiness Book of World Records in 1998 as his Volvo became the non-commercial vehicle with most miles driven by a single owner. The two-million miles barrier was overtaken in 2002 in Times Square, capturing national and international media attention. Now everyday he drives his P1800 Irv Gordon breaks his own record and he still wants to set a record than no one can beat.
With more than 2.8 million miles driven on his Volvo Irv Gordon is yet to stop driving his P1800. Last week, while celebrating his 70th birthday Irv Gordon showed his intentions to reach the 3 million miles mark in the nex three years.
"Three million miles by my 73nd birthday sounds right," Gordon said. "But, whether I reach that mark is more up to me than it is the car. The car's parts have long proven they can take it, but I'm not so sure about my own. Either way, it will be a fantastic testament to the engineering genius of Volvo as well as to the resiliency of folks my age.
Asked about what he would do to his Volvo P1800 after he reaches three million miles, Irv Gordon isn’t sure. Selling might be a possibility but the American says he won’t sell it for less than one dollar per each mile he's driven.
"I used to think I'd park it in a museum where people will get to enjoy seeing the car that beat the odds - all with the same engine, same radio, same axles, same transmission and of course the same driver," Gordon said. "Now I think, ‘no way.' I'll either keep driving it or sell it for $3 million."
And asked about what he would do with three million dollars, the answer is easy: "I'd spend it on traveling," he said. "Road trips, of course."
