MINI Coupé revealed in detail

MINI has taken the covers off its all-new two-door, two-seat Coupé which is scheduled for launch later this year. The new model is set to be available in four variants: the MINI Cooper Coupé, the MINI Cooper S Coupé, the MINI Cooper SD Coupé and the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé.

The entry level MINI Cooper Coupé houses a 1.6 litre petrol engine which produces 90 kW (122 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 160 Nm of torque 4,250 rpm. This allows for a 0–100 km/h of 9 seconds and a top speed of 204 km/h, with an average fuel consumption of 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 127 g/km.

Taking a step up to the MINI Cooper S Coupé also sees a 1.6 litre petrol engine, however this time it  features a twin-scroll turbocharger and produces 135 kW (184 hp) at 5,500 rpm and 240 Nm of torque from 1,600 – 5,000 rpm (or 260 Nm with overboost at 1,700 – 4,500 rpm). This one does to 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.9 seconds and will continue on to a top of 230 km/h. Its average fuel consumption will be 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres with CO2 emissions of 136 g/km.

The MINI Cooper SD Coupé is like the diesel brother of the S and is to feature a 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine which outputs 105 kW (143 hp) at 4,000 rpm and 305 Nm at 1,750 – 2,700 rpm. It is slightly slower than its petrol counterpart with 0-100 km/h taking 7.9 seconds and top speed limited to 216 km/h. However it will be more frugal with fuel consumption (4.3 l/100 km), as well as more environmentally friendly (114 g/km of CO2).

The performance model of the range, the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé, will contain a 1.6 litre twin-scroll turbocharged engine which features ‘numerous technological details carried over directly from motor sport’. It will produce 155 kW (211 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 260 Nm at 2,000 – 5,100 rpm (280 Nm with overboost at 1,700 – 4,500 rpm). Results are 0-100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h. This makes it the thirstiest of the line-up with fuel consumption averaging to 7.1 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 165 g/km.

All models will feature a distinctive “helmet roof” design, an active rear spoiler which extends automatically at 80 km/h to optimise airflow, a slightly more balanced chassis over the regular MINI’s, extended storage space due to the missing back seats and a six-speed manual gearbox as standard (auto can be fitted on MINI Cooper S Coupé, MINI Cooper Coupé and MINI Cooper SD Coupé). The Coupé will also sit up to 52 mm lower than the standard MINI, however it will only be slightly smaller dimension-wise with length and height decreased by 6 mm each.

I love it...I think it keeps the MINI common looks but still is able to create a different model, for different tastes...I just have a problem (must confess it) I'm a real MINI addict

If it were the MINI Cooper S Coupe, I'd buy it. Nice looks, plenty power... it would only depend on the price...

I am really split on this car. I've had a 2006 Mini since new, and I don't know if I would buy another. I know that these are based on the newer version of the chassis, so maybe a few of the quirks fr...
