We wrote an editorial about the Shelby 1000 when it was annouced last week. Shelby has released more pictures of the car, and a few more details about it in the mean time. The 1000 offers either 950hp or 1100hp depending on tune for about $150,000, plus the cost of a 2012 GT500 Mustang, which brings the final price to around $200,000 for the 950hp version of the car - the 1100hp car costs $5,000 more.
The new images show the car from the rear, the wheels and inside. For a car with so much power, the rear looks basically stock. If non-enthusiasts saw the car, it is possible that they would not know that this car was special at all, other than the badge. The wheels do not even look significantly larger compared to a normal GT500.
Inside things are equally stock. Shelby adds the gauge pod to the A-pillar and some Shelby-branded trim. Beyond that it leaves the inside alone.
The final new image shows the Shelby 1000's wheels and brakes. It gets three-piece, 20in billet wheels in either aluminum or black finish. The wheels are 9in wide in the front and 11in wide in the rear. It also gets upgraded Wilwood brakes with six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear.
Shelby did not release any images of the engine bay, but it did reveal exactly what buyers will get. The upgrade list is long and includes a fiberglass hood; heavy duty alternator; model-specific supercharger and throttle body; Shelby's connecting rods, pistons, piston rings, camshafts, valve springs, ported heads and fuel injectors; a stronger rear end; and 3in exhaust.
Shelby will be building these cars to order, which will determine the number produced. Of the many tunes that Shelby now offers, the Shelby 1000 is the top of the line. It will have the 1000 and the very first cobra side by side at the New York Motor Show.
