Car Magazine is reporting that a new Volkswagen Phaeton is coming in 2015. The car would be based on forth-coming Audi architecture and might have a plug-in hybrid option.
According to Car, the new Phaeton nearly showed up at the Frankfurt Auto Show a few weeks ago but was pulled at the last minute. Volkswagen did not want any car to get in the way of the Up's debut.
It is interesting that the Phaeton might be getting a successor because it has not exactly been a sales success. It sells about 6,000 cars annually, and according to Car about half of the Phaetons made are used internally by VW as demonstrators and courtesy cars.
The Phaeton was only sold for three years in the United States. At least in the US, it seems like buyers were not ready for a luxury Volkswagen when Audi has much more brand cache.
