and Alfa Romeo signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding today that the next generation Spider will be built at Mazda's Hiroshima factory on the same platform as the next gen MX-5. The final paperwork must be signed by the second half of this year, and if all goes to plan, the first cars will roll off the line in 2015.
The memorandum of understanding says that the cars will be "two differentiated, distinctly styled, iconic and brand-specific light weight roadsters featuring rear-wheel drive.”
According to Mazda, the two cars will be powered by separate engines unique to each car. That insinuates that the Alfa will use a fiat powerplant, while the Mazda will probably get one of their Skyactiv engines.
It is too early to say where the cars will be on sale. The MX-5 will almost surely come to the US and Europe, but the Alfa may or may not see North American shores.
Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne also said that Mazda and Alfa Romeo are discussing "further opportunities for co-operation in Europe." This seem likes an idea that could work out really well for both parties. Mazda has been looking for a partner since its sale by Ford, and Fiat/Alfa Romeo seems like a good choice.
In the case of the Alfa Spider and MX-5, it is hard to imagine a better partner. Who has proven the ability to make reliable, inexpensive and fun roadsters over the past 20 years better than Mazda?
"By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition. We are appreciative of this collaboration with Mazda and look forward to maintaining a fruitful and continuous relationship,” said Marchionne.
