In the US, 30 states require that headlights come on drivers are using their windshield wipers. When the wipers have done four cycles, the headlights automatically turn on.

Even in cars with automatic headlights, if it's raining during the daytime the headlights don't necessarily come on.  In this case, however, after four passes of the wipers the headlights automatically come on.  It's a very safe, very convenient feature for the customer," said Vishnu Jayamohan with Nissan Product Planning.

The other big innovation for the wipers will help drivers in cold climates. When the car is put into park, the windshield wipers complete their current cycle and return to the off position. That means that the wipers will not freeze to the windshield in the middle of the winter.
