It was yet another victory for Mercedes this weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Nico Rosberg won his sixth race of the season while his team-mate made an extraordinary recovery starting from 21st in the grid and managing to overtake 17 cars to finish in the lower podium position. Daniel Ricciardo for Red Bull was the runner-up in Spa.
Rosberg was expecting to recover some extra points in the championship race as Hamilton's engine change forced him to start on the bottom of the grid. But his team-mate recovery meant the German only managed to shorten his lead to nine points. Daniel Ricciardo solidified his third place in the drivers' standings ahead of duo Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.
The race at Spa started with an incident between the two Ferrari's and Max Verstappen. Vettel on the outside and Verstappen forcing on the inside sandwiched Raikkonen on the first turn. While the German spun the Finn and the Dutch drivers got their cars damaged and were forced to come to the pits.
Still on the opening lap Manor's Pascal Wehrlein ran into the back of Jenson Button's
McLaren at Les Combes and both drivers had to retire. Carlos Sainz only lasted up to lap two with a puncture forcing him to abandon.
Nine laps into the race a heavy crash from
Renault's Kevin Magnussen at Eau Rouge forced the safety car to come into action and later FIA race Director Charlie Whiting to red flag the race for 17 minutes. At the point Rosberg was leading ahead of Ricciardo,
Force India's Nico Hulkenberg, Alonso and Hamilton, with Vettel 11th, Verstappen 16th and Raikkonen 17th.
On the restart Raikkonen and Verstappen made contact again pushing themselves down the order. By then Hamilton had made his way up to third overtaking Hulkenberg on lap 18. Three laps later a slow visit to pits made him fall into ninth, but he would climb back to third behind Rosberg and Ricciardo, with other drivers also making their final pitstops.
Rosberg had a peaceful race and crossed the finish line with a 14.1 second lead over Ricciardo. Hamilton finished third ahead of Force India duo Hulkenberg and Perez, with the Indian team rising into fourth place in the constructors' championship, overtaking Williams by two points.
Vettel and Alonso were sixth and seventh, while
Williams' Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa were eighth and 10th respectively, split by Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen. With several incidents with the Finn Verstappen didn't go further than 11th.
