has reached worldwide cumulative sales of 6,072,900 units of hybrid models as of December 31, 2013, and in the last nine months it sold over a million hybrids. It estimates that the cars have saved 41 million tons of CO2 and 15 million kiloliters of gasoline (nearly 4 million gallons).

Toyota’s current range consists of 24 hybrids and one plug-in hybrid, and it plans to launch 15 new hybrids in the next two years.

. It took Toyota until 2007 to sell its first cumulative one million hybrids, and the two million mark was reached in 2009. The Prius family has become the world’s bestselling hybrid vehicle with 3,571,700 sold worldwide from its introduction to December 2013.

"When the next generation Prius arrives, it will begin a new era for a broad range of Toyota and Lexus vehicles,” and it will be “the first to introduce a substantially improved family of hybrid powertrains," said Toyota Managing Officer Satoshi Ogiso when outlining the future of the Prius in the US last year.

According to Ogiso, the next generation Prius will have a fuel economy improvement of at least 10%. The improvements will include: a new generation of batteries with higher energy densities; smaller, lighter electric motors with an even higher power density than the current motors; more efficient gasoline engines.
