The refreshed 4Runner follows the classic SUV formula by being based on a body-on-frame truck chassis. It is meant for buyers who want a truck that will be nearly as capable off-road as on-road. It comes with three drivetrains – rear wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive or full-time four-wheel drive with a locking center differential. A 4.0-liter V6 with 270hp and a five-speed automatic with a low-range transfer case powers all versions.

The refresh also means new styling, and it might be best to call it polarizing. The design is very angular and truck-like with aluminum accents on the front and rear bumpers. There is a large hood-mounted air intake and smaller gill-like intakes on each side of the front bumper. The roof rack gets similar aluminum accents as the bumpers.

The interior gets more soft touch materials and leather wrapping on the steering wheel and gearshift. All versions get power seats covered in either cloth or leather depending on trim level.

The 4Runner will be available in three trim levels – SR5, Limited and Trail. The SR5 and Limited trims are available with an optional third-row seat. The SR5 and Trail trims get 17in wheels, and the Limited gets 20in wheels.  The Trail trim adds hill descent control and an off-road traction control system that allows the driver to tune it for the right terrain. The Limited trim gets adaptable dampers added to the suspension, and it has electronically disconnecting stabilizer bars to increase suspension articulation in rough terrain.

Sales will begin in the coming months, but Toyota has not announced pricing yet.
