Toyota will have two new production cars and three concepts that look at the brand's future at the Tokyo Auto Show. Like the rest of the Japanese Automakers we have seen, Toyota is also focusing on electric and hybrids this year.
Toyota says its theme for this year's show is "Fun to Drive, Again," do not think too hard about that says about Toyotas from the last few years. The two production cars that Toyota will show are the new FT-86 and the Aqua hybrid.
Toyota is still keeping mostly mum on the FT-86 because it will probably be Toyota's big star for the show. It has not released any new specs or pictures yet, but they will soon.
The Aqua is a hybrid, compact hatchback that seats five. It has a 1.5 liter, petrol engine with a hybrid system that Toyota says will use about 2.9l/100km of fuel. The car is four meters long and looks like a more traditional hatchback compared to the Prius. The front end has some Prius queues, especially in the front grill, but other than that it looks like a very traditional five-door hatchback. The Aqua will launch in Japan in December 2011 and will eventually launch in the rest of the world, except for in Europe.
Toyota will also bring three concepts to Tokyo focusing on the near future, mid term and far future. The FT-EV III is an electrified version of the Toyota iQ. Toyota is considering launching a vehicle like this in 2012, and the FT-EV III has a range of 65 miles.
Next is the FCV-R that is meant to be a family-sized, hydrogen-powered sedan. Toyota plans to launch a vehicle like this in 2015. The car is 4.7 meters long with a range of 430 miles. It is a small hatchback with no visible doors, and it looks like drivers can decorate the car however they wish with pictures. The one pictured is covered in flowers.
Check back with Autoviva soon when Toyota releases more information on the FT-86 and Aqua.
Finally, Toyota looks at the far-flung future where it thinks cars, people and society will all be linked together. The
