Trends from Geneva: SUVs and Crossovers

Check out the novelties from the show

While the overall trend in vehicle sales points downwards in Europe, just one segment is standing out as a ray of hope for manufacturers: the SUV/Crossover class.

With the sales share consistently on the rise, no wonder, many of the new models presented in Geneva belong to exactly this hybrid genre of urban-off-road vehicles.

Autoviva went out to look for those that will set the trend in the coming year. Browse our gallery below and let us know which ones you like best!

Peugeot 2008

The 2008 is a compact crossover based on the 208. The two cars have similar grills and taillights, but the rest of the 2008 is unique. It has a higher stance than the 208 with large amount of glass area and aluminum roof rails. The body gets extra protection from larger, black bumpers and side trim. It rides on 17in wheels.

Ford Ecosport

The Fiesta-based compact crossover EcoSport will go head-to-head against the Opel Mokka when it goes on sale. It will be one of the first Fords in Europe to offer Ford SYNC AppLink. The EcoSport will be offered with several engines at launch. They will include the 123hp 1.0-liter EcoBoost, 109hp 1.5-liter petrol engine and 89hp 1.5-liter diesel.

Nissan Resonance

The Resonance is a crossover concept that uses a hybrid powertrain and it is rumored to show the direction for the next generation Murano. The front grill features a V-shaped chrome piece that leads directly to the headlights. The interior is mostly conceptual and is inspired by a VIP Lounge. Nissan says that the concept uses a hybrid powertrain with a CVT transmission and all-wheel drive.

Opel Adam Rocks Concept

Opel used the Corsa platform to launch the new Adam which is mechanically the same as the Corsa. Now it looks like Opel is considering taking Adam one step farther with the Adam Rocks crossover concept. Opel calls the Adam Rocks an urban mini-crossover that has been inspired by parkour. The biggest change over the regular Adam is the higher ride height and more muscular, wider body.

Suzuki SX4

Suzuki unveiled its all-new SX4 Crossover. The new SX4 Crossover is a production model based on the S-Cross, which Suzuki showcased at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. While moving into the C segment with its increased size, the new model inherits the “SX4” emblem. Suzuki created the new SX4 Crossover by uniting its compact car know-how with technologies honed for sport utility vehicles.

Range Rover Evoque Concept

Land Rover presents the Evoque Concept
with a nine-speed automatic transmission from ZF. While Land Rover calls it a concept, production for the transmission will begin soon in South Carolina, and it is only a matter of time until buyers can actually own this truck. The ZF 9HP is the first nine-speed automatic transmission for a passenger car and is specifically designed for cars for transverse engine layouts.

Land Rover Defender Electric

This pure EV Defender is meant to show that an electrified car can still go off-road. The experimental Defender uses a 94hp electric motor with a lithium-ion battery with 27kWh of charge. It gives the truck a range of 50 miles. The battery can be charged in between four and ten hours depending on the charger. Land Rover isn't planning production of this one, but the first EV-SUVs seem on the horizon...

Mini John Cooper Works Paceman

The John Cooper Works Paceman packs the same 218ps 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with all-wheel drive as the Countryman as well. Transmission options include either a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic.
To set it off from the rest of the Paceman line, the JCW version gets a complete body kit.

Volkswagen CrossUp

Volkswagen turned the Up into a compact crossover with the new Cross Up that will go on sale in the late summer. Volkswagen raised the ride height slightly, added black moldings along the wheel arches and sills, door protector strips mid way up the four doors, roof rails and 16in wheels. Other style improvements include silver side mirror covers and a silver finish on the bumpers.

Audi RS Q3

Audi first showed the concept for the RS Q3 at Auto China Beijing in April 2012, but the 2013 Geneva Motor Show received the presentation of the production version. While power is slightly lower than the concept version, it is still the first production Audi ‘Q’ vehicle to get the RS logo. The production version produces 310hp from Audi’s 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder engine with start/stop.

Renault Captur

The Captur’s styling was inspired by the new Clio. It is slightly boxier, though, and its white roof gives a pleasant contrast. The Captur measures 4.12m, and with its wheels pushed to the edges and forward windscreen, it has remarkable interior room. The car will be offered with a group of engines shared with the new Clio and the cleanest models will produce 96g/km of CO2.

Renault Scenic XMOD

The XMOD borrows the platform from the Scenic but comes with a new Extended Grip traction control system that lets the driver select from a variety of traction settings - expert, road and loose ground. It also gets a taller ride height, alloy wheels and the Energy TCe 130 engine. The XMOD also gets unique front and rear bumpers, side sill guards and chrome roof bars.

SsangYong SIV-1

Korean brand SsangYong brought a premium crossover concept to the Geneva Motor Show 2013 that it calls the SIV-1, which stands for Smart Interface Vehicle. The concept is a premium-oriented crossover that shows the brand's future exterior design direction. The SIV-1 will feature four bucket seats inside. It is 4.5m (14.8ft) long, 1.88m (6.2ft) wide, 1.64m (5.4ft) tall and has a 2.7m (8.9ft) wheelbase.

Subaru Viziv Concept

Subaru says that the VIZIV represents the future of Subaru exterior design. The name means 'Vision for Innovation,' and is meant to show Subaru's continued dedication to all-wheel drive vehicles.
