Veloster Turbo European Debut in Geneva with Less Power than US Model

Veloster Turbo European Debut in Geneva

The Veloster Turbo was revealed to the United States at the North American International Auto Show, but it is not quite yet on sale. The Hyundai hot hatch will get its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday.

Oddly, the car is taking quite a power cut in Europe compared to the US. The European spec car is rated at 186ps (183.5hp), whereas the North American car is rated at 204ps (201hp). However, torque is up slightly for the European version at 270Nm, compared to 264Nm in the US. It uses the same direct-injected 1.6 liter engine with a twin-scroll turbo. Hyundai has not announced fuel economy or emissions figures for the car yet.

“UK drivers tend to prefer more torque from a lower engine speed, so our European engineers have specified a set-up that still provides a substantial increase in power – up from 140 ps to 186 ps – while also delivering the desired low-end torque,” said Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor UK.

The Veloster Turbo is a serious performance upgrade over the standard Veloster. The European model accelerates to 100km/h in 8.4 seconds. It also features a quicker steering ratio and stiffer front and rear suspension. It comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission

Other added features include 18in wheels, projection headlights with LED accents and LED tail lights.

The Veloster Turbo will be on sale in Europe later this year.
