SUV. It also shows off Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture modular platform that will be used on its next generation models.

“SPA enables us to create the great proportions that are important to achieving a premium look. The engineers can solve the safety challenges with more extensive use of high-strength boron steel and a new ingenious electrical architecture,” said Thomas Ingenlath, head of design at Volvo.

The Concept XC Coupe blends the design of a coupe and crossover. It features a new one-piece, metal grill and two-piece, stacked headlights with T-shaped running lights. Volvo says that the new headlights and grill design will be carried over to its upcoming production cars.

The LED taillights will also be carried over to future production cars. It is made from a single strip of LEDs that outline the silhouette of the car’s rear.

The concept itself is entirely white with gray trim. The only pops of color are the orange front and rear skid plates.

“The Volvo Concept XC Coupe is perfectly in tune with this active lifestyle. Its capability and protection is cleverly integrated into the sophisticated looks. Concept XC Coupé is ready and willing to bring you into the adventure zone and back,” said Ingenlath.

Volvo says that the design is meant to allow drivers to pursue outdoor activities, while being stylish and functional for daily use.

In comparison to the Concept XC Coupe, Ingenlath says that the production XC90 will have a larger and fuller look than the concept. It will also be a three-row, seven-seater, as opposed to the four-seater concept.

The production XC90 will be powered by Volvo's new family of four-cylinder engines, including the hybrid and turbocharged variant that Volvo claims has power equal to a V8.
