converted to R specification that was owned and raced by Moss will go on sale at Mecum Auctions Monterey sale. Will the Moss connection boost this car’s sale price too?

The only thing holding the car back might be that Moss is not the car’s original owner. He bought the 1965 Shelby GT350 in 1993 and used it until 1999. It was originally sold in San Antonio, Texas, in 1966 as a model left over from the year before, it and was the one of 252 1965 GT350s  left over for 1966. In total, 562 1965 GT350s were made.

The 1965 GT350 is considered the most desirable of the Shelby Mustangs. It was the first year that Shelby built the cars, and they were the smallest and lightest cars made. Power came from a 4.7-liter (289 cubic inch) V8 with 306hp and four-speed manual transmission. Other modifications included front disc brakes, a heavy-duty rear suspension and removal of the rear seats. The R specification stripped out the interior and added a higher flow carburetor and better engine cooling.

Moss raced the car in nine times in events including the Targa Tasmania and other historic races in the US and Europe. The car has changed hands three times since Moss owned it.

Mecum Auctions has not given any estimate on what it thinks the car will sell for. Authentic GT350R cars routinely sell for around $1 million.
