The four-time world champion took the lead early in the race when he opted not to pit when a safety car was sent out to the track. Vettel and Ferrari opted for a two-stop strategy while Mercedes chose to make three.
Despite the stronger pace, Mercedes' Hamilton and Rosberg failed to catch Vettel in the lead who managed his first victory since the Brazilian Grand Prix 2013 and the first from Ferrari since the Spanish Grand Prix of the same year.
With second place in Malaysia, Hamilton retains the championship lead with 43 points, three more than Vettel, with Nico Rosberg seven points behind the German after finishing in third place.
