Koenigsegg brings the Agera a level up

One million, six hundred twenty-three thousand, one hundred forty-five dollars, ($US) give or take a thousand, depending on the exchange rate.  That’s about 1,173,301 Euros.  Or maybe $1456 per horse power.  Or even $1220 per kilo.  It’s hard to wrap your head around hypercar numbers, especially hypercars like the Koenigsegg Agera R that live at the top of the automotive food chain.

What do you get for $200,000 (US) and change over the standard Koeningsegg Agera?  Power.  The heart of the Agera R is a 5.0-liter, twin-turbo charged, 32 valve V8 producing 1115 horsepower (820 kW) & 885 (1200 Nm) lb/ft of torque on E85 ethanol.  Yes, the Agera R is green, making peak power only on bio fuel. Fill it with standard high-octane petrol and the Agera R makes a meager 930 hp (691 kW) & 811 (1100 Nm) lb/ft of torque. The engine is mated to a newly developed, lightweight 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. Power is routed to the tarmac via Koenigsegg’s electronic (E-Diff) limited slip differential.

The chassis is, as you’d expect, a carbon fiber monocoque.  Weighing a feathery 70 kg (154 lbs) and designed to run roofless, its stiffness is rated at a granite like 65K Nm/deg. The Agera R, is also a study in lightness.  Filled with fluids and ready to run with half a tank of E85, the Agera R weighs an astonishing 3120 lbs. (1418 kg), or about 1000 lbs. less than the current top speed king, the mighty Bugatti Veyron (1888 kg).

The interior is a no nonsense mix of high-end leather, alcantara, aluminum and carbon fiber. Especially handsome is the now hypercar ubiquitous, thick, flat bottomed steering wheel, trimmed in white leather, carbon fiber and red contrast stitching.

Official performance numbers haven’t been released but we expect 0-60 times in the low 3-second range with a top speed of 250 MPH (402 kph) or better. The Agera R comes with bespoke Michelin tires speed rated at 260 mph (420 kph), making them the highest speed rated tires on the market.  These special Michelin’s are fitted to the Agera R via forged alloy Koenigsegg “VGR” or vortex generating rim wheels.  They’re said to, “increase the down force by measurable amounts and improve brake cooling.”  Though the “measurable amount” isn’t divulged, they are quite sexy.

The Agera R is also quite practical, if you tick the Thule option for $28K (US).  Koenigsegg has partnered with Thule to create a fixed carbon fiber roof box that comes with a pair of Koenigsegg skis.  Doing so does limit top speed to 186 mph (300 kph) and it is somewhat reminiscent of a remora (the little fish that attach themselves to great white sharks).  Tick the winter wheels & tires option box for $15K (US) and you’re ready for a high-speed weekend in Gstaad.
