The CrossBlue Concept was introduced at NAIAS in Detroit in 2013. It is a future seven-seater SUV model launched by VW intended especially for the U.S. market.

The prototype will reach the market in 2015 and is part of VW's strategy to increase sales in the United States and Canada.

The CrossBlue prototype was developed in Germany under the leadership of Walter da Silva, Chief Designer of the Volkswagen Group, and Klaus Bischoff, head of designer at Volkswagen, in cooperation with Volkswagen of America. If this new model enters production, it will be placed above the Tiguan and below Touareg in the range of the German brand.

The CrossBlue is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system that combines a diesel TDI engine with two electric motors, a DSG transmission and a full electric drivetrain. According to Volkswagen the prototype shows an average consumption of 2.1 l/100km.
