2012 5 Series Gets Updated Engines in Europe

Constant progress is necessary in today's competitive automotive world. BMW is upgrading many of its engines, both petrol and diesel, to improve their power and efficiency.

On the petrol side of things the BMW 520i develops 134kW/184hp and accelerates to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds. Top speed is 227km/h. Fuel consumption has been improved to 6.8-7 liters/100km and CO2 emissions of 157-163g/km. You can add about .3l/100km and 6g/km of CO2for Touring models.

The petrol 528i has also been improved. It makes 180kW/245hp, and it accelerates to 100km/h in 6.4 seconds. It averages 6.8-7.1 liters/100km and CO2 emissions of 159-169g/100km of CO2. Touring models have the same increase of about .3l/100km for fuel consumption and 6g/km of CO2.

Both of these four-cylinder engines now use BMW twin scroll turbocharger that gets air separately from two sets of cylinders. This balances out the pulses of exhaust through the turbo to increase power from the turbo and improve throttle response.

The 535i is getting start/stop technology. Power remains the same, but fuel efficiency has been improved 9% to an average of 8.1-8.3l/100km and CO2 emissions of 188-194g/km of CO2.

BMW is also adding a new top-of-the-range 550i Touring. The power wagon gets BMW's turbocharged 4.4l V8 making 300kW/407hp and accelerates to 100km/h in 5.1 seconds. It uses 10.7l/100km of petrol and produces 249-250g/km of CO2.

BMW has also improved the diesel 520d, 535d and is introducing the new 525d.

The 520d produces 135kW/184hp and averages 4.5l/100km of diesel. It accelerates to 100km/h in 8.2 seconds.

The new 525d is actually the same 2.0 liter engine as the 520d but has an added turbo to increase power. The twin turbo engine produces 160kW/218hp. It accelerates to 100km/h in 7 seconds with a top speed of 243km/h. Its average fuel consumption is 5.0-5.3l/100km and produces 132-138g/km of CO2.

The six cylinder diesel BMWs are also getting updated for 2012. The 530d gets a 10kW boost in horsepower to 190kW/258hp. It can accelerate to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds. Average fuel consumption has been improved by 13% to an average of 5.7-5.9l/100km and CO2 emissions are between 149 and 155g of CO2.

The fastest diesel 5-series, the 535d, is also updated for 2012. It is actually 3.0 liters, but the wick has been turned up on the turbos. It produces 230kW/313hp, and with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, it accelerates to 100km/h in 5.5 seconds. Its fuel consumption is 5.4-5.6l/100km and it produces 142-148g/km of CO2.

So there you have it, BMW's huge range of updated and one new engine. It certainly has the range of power and fuel consumption covered. It seems that if you want a diesel-powered saloon car, then BMW has one that is just right for any buyer.
