The record time for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb fell twice this weekend. First Porsche factory driver Romain Dumas climbed the mountain in 9:46.18 in a 2012 Porsche GT3RPorsche 911 GT3 RGermany, 2010 > present4 photos

. Then later in the day Rhys Millen did it in 9:46.16 in a 2012 Hyundai Genesis CoupeHyundai Genesis CoupéRepublic of Korea, 2013 > present6 photos

Surprisingly, neither car came from the Unlimited Class. Dumas was in the Pikes Peak Open Class and Millen was in the Time Attack Class. The record time was expected to fall this year because it is the first year that the entire course is paved. Nobuhiro Tajima held the previous record with a 9:51.278 time.
The motorcycle record was also broken this year. Carlin Dunne was the first rider ever to break the 10-minute barrier on a motorcycle with a 9:52 time on a Ducati Multistrada.
Dumas was upset that he did not win and felt that he could have won if he had gone earlier. The cars are released by class not by the fastest times set on Saturday. That forced Dumas to go earlier on a slightly wetter road than Millen had later in the day. With a difference of two hundredths of a second, it might have made the difference. It was Dumas' first ever time at the hill climb.
"We spend all this money to come for one weekend and it's not fair. I know it's bad to speak like that of a race since I am a newcomer, but it is not fair," said Dumas.
Millen and his father, Rod Millen, have been competing at Pikes Peak for years. Rod held the course record from 1994 to 1997. Rhys took the Time Attack Class record in 2011 in a Genesis Coupe with an 11:04.912 time.
"This is just unbelievable. We just competed against the best in the world and beat them," said Millen said.

driven by Jean Phillipe Dayraut nor Paul Dallenbach's custom PVA-03 were able to make it up the mountain. The Dacia broke down, and Dallenbach had a crash that destroyed the car.
Previous record-holder Tajima's Monster Sport Pikes Peak Special in the Electric Class also had a breakdown on the mountain.
The video below shows Millen qualifying on Saturday to lead the Time Attack Class.
