The series production model and the Zafira Tourer Concept will be the main highlights of the Opel stand at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The latest ecoFLEX models will also mark their presence in the stand with the renewed Corsa and Antara.
Ampera arriving on schedule
With the first deliveries programmed for the end of this year, the Opel Ampera is right on schedule and the car that will be presented in Geneva is the one that the customers will receive. The final version of the Ampera isn’t much different from the first concepts the targets set during development phase seem to have been accomplished.
So, by the end of the year, Opel will become the first European manufacturer to offer an electric model in Europe. The Ampera extended-range electric will be suitable for daily usage, with Opel trying to eliminate the so-called ‘range-anxiety’.
Always powered by electricity, the Ampera is driven solely on electric power between the first 40 to 80 kilometres, with the power being supplied by the 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery.
A depleted battery would take four hours to recharge just by plugging the car’s charging system into a 230V standard outlet. For longer trips the Ampera’s range can be extended to more than 500 kilometres thanks to the gasoline-fueled engine/generator.
The electric engine featuring on the Ampera produces a total power of 150 hp and torque of 370 Nm, which enable the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in around nine seconds and to reach a top speed of 161 km/h.
First look at the new Zafira
In Geneva Opel will also give everyone the first glimpse of what can be expected for the new generation Zafira. According to Mark Adams, Vice President Opel/Vauxhall, the Zafira Tourer Concept brings the concept of a lounge into a motor vehicle.
“A lounge is a place you want to escape to and relax, a place where you really want to be. We wanted to offer the same feeling in a monocab and make it the lounge you want to spend time in,” explained Adams.
The new ecoFlex models
Finally Opel will be featuring in its stand the latest EcoFlex models to be added to its lineup: Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFlex and the Astra 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX. Thanks to the implementation of the Start/Stop technology both models were able to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without loosing on performance or dynamic driving.
The Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX with its 70 kW/95 hp powertrain combined with the Start/Stop technology now offers a fuel consumption of 3.5 liters per 100 km and produces 94 g/km of CO2.
In the case of the Opel Astra, the 5-door hatchback 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX had its fuel consumption reduced to 3.9 l/100km, while CO2 emissions were cut to 104 g/km. The Sports Tourer version with the Start/Stop technology consumes 4.1l/100km and produces CO2 emissions of 109 g/km.
