BMW is providing a fleet of 3,122 vehicles for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London. With the exception of the 25 R1200RT motorcycles that BMW is providing for cycling events, all of the vehicles are either diesel, electric or hybrids, and 80% fulfill the EU6 emissions standards and have an average CO2 emissions of 116g/km of CO2. It is also giving the organizations 400 bicycles for the use to support water-based sports for coaches and officials.
The vehicles will be used as shuttles, carrying doctors and other crew during cycling events, command car for the Torch Relay, towing boats and horses and more official purposes.
“From motorcycles to electric vehicles and 4x4s, the requirements of the 2012 fleet are hugely diverse. BMW and MINI have provided a variety of different cars, ideal both for city driving and long distance, to travel to Olympic and Paralympic venues around the country. It was vital that our partner in this field could deliver a one-stop shop solution and meet our sustainability targets. BMW has surpassed our requirements and we are delighted to be working with them,” said Richard George, Transport Director for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The vehicles include 160 BMW 1-Series ActiveE vehicles to shuttle athletes and journalists; 40 Mini E cars for operational usage and to support the Olympic Torch Relay; 200 Mini Countryman Cooper Ds as shuttles from London Heathrow; 1,550 320d Efficient Dynamics for the Olympic Torch Relay and and cycling events; 700 520d Efficient Dynamics as shuttles; 20 5-Series Active Hybrids as shuttles; 17 X3 xDrive 20d for towing boats; and 10 X5 xDrive 30ds for towing horses.
