was revealed that it plans to offer a range-extended internal combustion engine on its pure electric car. The car will get an optional, two-cylinder engine that will more than double total range.
According to BMW Head of Research and Development Herbert Diess, the two-cylinder engine will be sourced from a BMW motorcycle and will be an option on the i3. The engine will boost the car's range from up to 90 miles (145km) on pure electric power to 250 miles (400km) with the range-extending engine.
The engine will be stored under a panel in the rear of the car and connected to a generator to charge the battery. It will not be linked to the wheels. BMW has not said whether the added engine will have an effect on rear storage.
The electric motor in the i3 produces 170hp and 184lb-ft of torque.
"I imagine many buyers will order the range extender to cure their range anxiety, discovering later they need it very seldom," said Diess.
Still, Diess is anticipating order rates for the range-extending engine will be 50% for early cars but will fall as people have a better understanding of what the i3 offers.
