on December 4 that was purchased by Aristotle Onassis as a gift for Greek pop star Stamatis Kokotas. By itself the car is quite rare with just 140 made, but Onassis ordered embellishments for the car that make it even rarer.
The Miura S was introduced in 1968 as an upgrade for the P400Lamborghini Miura P400Italy, 1966 > 19692 photos
with horsepower boosted by 20hp to 370hp, upgraded tires, electric windows and a stiffer chassis. The company made just 140 of them before the further upgraded Miura SVLamborghini Miura P400SVItaly, 1971 > 19723 photos
was introduced in 1971.
Onassis ordered the car with air conditioning with polished aluminum HVAC vents. The passenger grab handle, gear lever, window switches, ignition switch and steering wheel boss are all made from engraved aluminum. Outside, the car has polished aluminum headlight surrounds and four driving lights.
Kokotas drove the car until 1972 when it had an engine problem. He parked the car in the underground garage of an Athens hotel and shipped the engine to Lamborghini for repair. However, Kokotas either lost interest or could not afford the repairs because the car sat in the same spot at the Athens hotel until 2003 when it was being renovated for the 2004 Olympics. It was moved to another underground garage at that time.
The engine remained at Lamborghini, was repaired and was on display at their museum until this auction. The winning bidder will receive the original engine, but it is not installed in the car.
The car was painted in metallic brown, but as you can see it is not in the best condition. After sitting for roughly 40 years, the car is going to need a major restoration. Although, the interior appears to be in perfect condition in the auction listing.
Coys estimates the car will sell for between £320,000 - £370,000.
Interestingly, in an auction of mostly British sports cars and luxury cars, Coys is auctioning a second Miura as well in the auction. This car is a 1967 Miura that was converted by Lamborghini to SV specifications, and it includes all of the invoices and paperwork to prove it. It also appears to be in much better condition. It expects that it will sell for between £370,000 - £420,000. It might be the better buy given the extensive restoration the other car needs.
You can view the entire auction catalog here, which also includes a large number of vintage movie posters.
