has introduced a new dirt detection technology used during the painting process to create a better finish for its cars. It uses high-resolution cameras to scan the cars and look for dirt and particles as small as a grain of sand. It believes that the tech will mean an 82% improvement in paint quality.

The cameras create 3,150 images of the car in 15 seconds to look for dirt particles, and it replaces the previous visual inspection done by technicians. When an imperfection is found, the system tells workers where the car needs to be buffed and polished.

“This system ensures better paint jobs and surface finishes for Ford customers around the world,” said Tom Dougan, project manager.
