is launching a test of its Micro Commuter Prototype β, its micro EV city car, this fall in Saitama City, Japan. The project will monitor usage and the needs of electric city car drivers in urban areas. Honda will be using it to study the feasibility of offering a car like this for sale. The city wants to investigate creating a better electric car infrastructure.
The Micro Commuter Prototype β is meant for short distance, urban commuting. The battery, motor and control unit are located under the floor in the rear to maximize useable space. It also means that multiple body shapes can be offered over the same vehicle. All of the cars in the test will be two-seaters, the passenger seat is movable in such a way that two children can ride in the car.
Honda is looking at offering the car through car sharing services and whether it fits the needs of senior citizens and young families.
The Japanese government is considering a new vehicle category for this type of car, and Honda wants to have a vehicle ready to fill the niche.
Participants in the study will be able to use excess power from the Micro Commuter Prototype β’s battery to power their homes.
Honda is in negotiations with two other Japanese prefectures to conduct similar EV studies in cities there. Each program will be separate and tailored to each region.
