Coupe from the Frankfurt Motor Show is on the way. In fact, Mercedes design boss Jan Kaul says that the concept is “very close to the production version.” The concept was finished two months before the Frankfurt show, and the design work for the production version was already under way when the concept was shown.
The production version will look similar to the concept but not exactly the same. The concept was built on a previous generation S-Class chassis but used parts that are planned for the production car.
The real version has a 30mm higher ride height and is 20mm narrower than the concept. In terms of the actual design, the nose is slightly higher and blunter than the concept, according to Kaul.
“A car like this is very much part of Mercedes’ coupé history; when we started on the project we imagined the kind of car that might be driven in a James Bond movie,” said Kaul.
The interior will be different from the concept with a dashboard split into upper and lower portions with lines that run into the door trim to create a wraparound experience. Like the S-Class is will have two 12.3in displays that display the instruments and infotainment.
Kauls says the interior trim for the concept was made out of milled aluminum that would take too long to use in the production car.
Mercedes’ strategic plan for the car is to have a higher base price than the CL-ClassMercedes-Benz CL-Class Gen.5Germany, 2010 > present5 versions
