The CLA uses transverse engines and front wheel drive. Some versions of the model will be available with 4MATIC technology including the still undisclosed CLA45 AMG.

In terms of design, the new Mercedes model may be associated with the CLS. The brand's Director of Design, Gorden Wagener describes it as a "style rebel" and suggests that its exterior looks will influence the design of future models, including the mechanically identical compact SUV model GLA that will be probably launched later this year.

A key feature announced by Mercedes is the CLA's aerodynamics that according to the automaker has a coefficient of drag of 0.22 for the CLA180 BlueEFFICIENCY. If confirmed it would be a record for production vehicles.

Initially the CLA should use more powerful versions of A and B-Class four-cylinder engine lineup. The 1.6 engine co-developed with Renault will be used in the CLA180. The top of the line CLA250 will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0l 208hp engine. The only diesel version, the CLA220 CDI, will be equipped with a turbo diesel 2.1l 168hp engine.

Other engines will be introduced later including a 2.0 AMG unit that will power the all-wheel drive CLA45AMG.
