has taken the wraps off the E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabriolet. The coupe and cabriolet will replace the CLK Coupe and Convertible in the Mercedes lineup.

The E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet wear the new nose from the rest of the E-Class range with integrated headlights with LED running lights. The headlights appear to be two, separate units when on, but are actually unified now for the first time in two generations.

The cars also get more aggressive front bumpers with a more pronounced V-shape and larger air intakes. The rear fenders are slightly pushed out to give the car a sportier look. Neither of the new cars has a B-pillar, which makes the car a little more like CL-Class.

The E-Class Cabriolet gets a specially insulated soft top that Mercedes claims gives the car the lowest interior noise in its class. It also has an optional Aircap and Airscarf system to make passengers more comfortable while driving. The Aircap is a wind deflector that deploys automatically above 40km/h, and Airscarf warms passengers’ necks while driving.

Of course, mechanically, these two cars are identical to the new sedan with the same six petrol and three diesel engines and availability of 4matic all-wheel drive. Power ranges between 170hp and 408hp.

"The new E-Class represents a major step forward in every respect. The design elicits plenty of emotion, causing a stir in its segment. Its technical highlights are unique. For example, new assistance systems from the upcoming S-Class take the burden off the driver by automatically keeping the vehicle in its lane and also tracking traffic in tailbacks. For the first time, there are also systems that can prevent accidents involving crossing traffic or pedestrians," said Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler head of research.

The new cars also get the same new safety features as the sedan and estate.  It gets a front-mounted, two-camera system that scans the road up to 500 meters ahead. The image from these cameras is sent to the safety systems for processing, and the information is used by the Collision Prevention Assist system, adaptive braking, active lane keeping, adaptive headlights, parking assist, traffic sign detection and other safety systems.

"Three words sum up both the E-Class Coupe and the four-seater Cabriolet model: captivating, athletic, passionate. It is especially pleasing that the two vehicles also incorporate the most intelligent technology ever. This makes them true dream cars," said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, head of sales and marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars.
